Stress is a normal natural response- a biological reaction to a perceived threat or threatening situation. A stress response is a physical reaction; elevated blood pressure, a speedier pulse rate, energy levels increasing, creating more mental activity and strength of muscle. The body is preparing to race into “flight or fight”, the reaction is purely innate and mechanical.
To produce anything we need a certain level of stress; to pick up a knife and fork to eat; getting up in the morning; exercising; working. Employers have for a long time understood that to produce an effective worker the work environment needs to create a certain amount of stress… if not the environment, sadly, the workload! The saying, “Always ask a busy person to do something.” Directly relates to levels of stress.
A stress response includes increases in blood pressure, pulse rate, energy levels, mental activity and muscle strength.
Like with any anxiety there is however only a certain amount of stress that we can take; until the body (and mind) reaches overload- we peak and then drop once more into the ineffectiveness of no stress. The aim is to become aware of what our optimum levels of stress are for us to function efficiently and effectively without “overload”.
